Inspiration for the story

“My inspiration for Z and the sea came from thought scenarios based on the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers. In university, I had researched Protagoras, Aristotle, and Plato, and had written papers on these scenarios that were centered around the perception of what reality is, and how it is shaped by others. I realized that at the core; all philosophers understood each person could only truly perceive their own reality, and this was an inescapable fact… It was like a net. We are influenced by others, same as they are influenced by us; like waves crashing into one another. All the madness and the unknown of our lives is a sea, and what we really know is just a small island.”
